Guarulhos, Brazil

Guarulhos Brazil

Guarulhos is the second most populous city in the state of São Paulo, with more than 1.4 million inhabitants, and is the most populous non‑capital city in Brazil. It was founded in 1560 by Jesuits to protect the village of São Paulo dos Campos de Piratininga (the present-day city of São Paulo) from attacks by the Tamoios Indians. Throughout its history, Guarulhos has undergone a major transformation: it was once a town focused on gold extraction, later became a center for the brick industry, and today is a diversified industrial city that hosts several important Brazilian and international companies. Its development has been strongly favored by its strategic location near São Paulo, within the Rio–São Paulo corridor that links the two most important cities in Brazil. Guarulhos is home to the most important airport in Brazil, São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport, also known as Cumbica Airport, which is the second-busiest airport in Latin America.
